Turning Fifty

Lessons I’ve Learned at Fifty

  1. There are three universal truths – we are born, we will die, and our life is our responsibility. Blame no one.
  2. Expectations are rarely met. Sometimes they’re surpassed and sometimes life will disappoint, but there are few parallels between what your mind drummed up and what happens.
  3. People’s bar for truth and integrity is not always the same as yours. Trust carefully.
  4. Honor those who, without conditions, love and honor you. That is a gift to be treasured.
  5. Tomorrow is never guaranteed.
  6. Chances are you are a heck of a lot better than you think you are. Or, in some cases not as good. Be humble, someone out there is always going to be better.
  7. Money can make you comfortable, but it doesn’t make you happy.
  8. Never judge others based on how they look.
  9. Everyone is someone. Don’t be arrogant and think you’re worth more.
  10. Animals are gifts from God. Especially dogs.
  11. Sometimes your behavior is not a reflection of you, but rather of your circumstances. Don’t judge others on moments in time. I’ve done things, said things and behaved in ways I deeply wish I could undo, but it was the best I could do at that time.
  12. Do better next time.
  13. Life will often beat you to your knees. Get up and keep moving forward.
  14. Some people will truly let you down and break you. It is because they are broken. Don’t lose yourself to someone who wants to project their disharmony onto you.
  15. Sometimes it’s okay to let go.
  16. When you a loved one, a piece of you will go with them and you’ll never get it back.
  17. Don’t judge yourself on what others think of you. Their journey isn’t yours.
  18. If there is something you want to do, if it’s legal and not going to hurt you or others, do it! You might not get a second chance.
  19. I remember the trips I took, the people I’ve met and cared for, and many stories I’ve been told or experienced myself, but I don’t remember the clothes I was wearing, the purse I carried, the way I wore my hair or what jewelry was on my body.
  20. Life is hard, but it can also be beautiful. Seek the beauty in others, in the universe and in helping others. Pay it forward when you can.
  21. Things will never be our legacy, it is the memories we created for and with others that live on. Act strong, be brave, be honest, true and kind. And no matter who or what kicks you to your knees, get up and keep moving forward.
